The Boss 302 was produced so Ford could go road racing in the SCCA series, Sports Car Club of America. Back then you had to produce at least 500 factory cars to show you were entering a factory produced car in the series. The car you could purchase from the dealer was very similar to the actual race car. The name 302 comes from the engine cubic inches, 302 with built heads and block. I believe the 302 was the biggest engine you could run in the SCCA series in those years, such as the Z28 Camaro which was also run had a 302 engine. The Boss 302 factory version also only came with a 4speed trans and all the markings such as the racer. Suspension was stiff and made for the tight turns on the road course. It was made to race and was one hot looking car all the way around.
The Mach 1 was similar in looks such as louvers and spoilers and it's own badge, MACH 1. It was mainly a nice addition to the Mustang line that included many engine sizes from 302, 351W & 351C, 390, 428 & the 429 which was very rare.
Both of these Mustangs in 1969 & 1970 are very desirable and a real one of each will run some bucks. If you are buying make sure you understand Vin numbers. The Boss 302 was only in a fastback model so don't be fooled by anything else.

engine and suspenion 302 boss was set up for road racing and 429 boss was set up for drag racing and ford had build a car with the 429 boss mustang in order to use that engine in a NASCAR built car so the mach-1 was built more for road comfort and the boss was for racing if the cars were side by side in looking at them only the stripes would be different
