I Have A 1965 Mustang Fastback With Starting Issues?

Asked by admin on November 25th, 2009 Listed in: Mustang Fastback

1965 mustang fastback, 289, auto.
It seems like the battery is dead, I have thrown a charger on it and it shows fully charged within a few minutes. Also I have tried a jump box and that does nothing. all it does is clicks and if I hold the key to the start position the solenoid starts smoking and the wires and or terminals where the wire going down to the starter get HOT. The starter is 6 months old, as is the battery. Anyone have any suggestions?

  1. Sounds like a defective starter. If you crank it more than 10 seconds at a time……you can kill a new one quickly.
Bad start solinoid……hurt by the previously bad starter drawing too much current through it. Make sure the connections there are good and tight and shiny.
hopefully, the battery is newer than 3yrs old and passes a load test.
