The 79-86 Mustangs are known as "four eyed" cars. They have four headlights. In 1987 the Mustangs got composite headlights.
Essentially the holdup on body kits is that they radically redid the front bumper in 1987 too. You can make about all the 1987-93 body kit stuff work for you except for the front spoiler/bumper stuff. Also the hoods are very different.
A popular solution is to bolt on the entire front end, fenders and all, from a later car. It's not straightforward but lots of folks have done it. You can probably dig up info on such a swap on a number of Mustang discussion forums such as StangNet.
Another is to just look over the 1987 and up stuff and hunt some 1985-86 "Saleen" or Saleen styled body kits. They look like this-http://www.mustangmonthly.com/featuredve…
Years back, my brother in law bought the body FX pieces and rear spoiler from Saleen for his 1985. For some reason he never liked the front bumper/spoiler and didn't buy that piece. His GT looks just fine without it.
